Journey & Journeys: Transhumance - La Transumanza

In the November 2002 isssue issue of journal "In cammino", Vincenzo Battista will present an unusual reading, through texts and pictures, of the essence of the "journey" - or migrating, in a word - of man against the wide natural scenarios and his own personal identities, "in the never-ending search for inner emotions" appearing along his paths. Vincenzo Battista, a witness "on the field", gives an interpretation of signs and what is left of a geography and the symbolic landscape, changing within the culture of transhumance - the seasonal migration of Abruzzese shepherds and their flocks, a rich repertoire of symbols and meanings, layer after layer throughout the centuries.

Leed) Nel numero di novembre 2002 della rivista "In cammino", Vincenzo Battista presenta un'inconsueta lettura (testi e fotografie) sulla natura del "viaggio", degli spostamenti, in definitiva dell'uomo tra i grandi scenari dela natura e le sue identità personali, "alla continua ricerca di tensioni interiori" che si manifestano lungo i tragitti. "Sul campo" l'autore interpreta i segni e quanto resta di una geografia e del suo paesaggio simbolico nel suo divenire, nel suo trasformarsi dentro la cultura della transumanza dei pastori abruzzesi nel ricco repertorio di simboli e significati stratificati nei secoli.

"Learn how to leave again and restart".

This is an exhortation to earn, through "the journey" that self-awareness of "being able to look into" things and people, a different perspective from the commonplace attitude of our times. "A Journey" therefore, also in photography, or better, a model of being able to look into the "private geography" of a social group, strongly consistent in their social events, actions, working life, a relic remnant of a wold that is almost gone forever.

It is just in this scenario that photography attempts to read the historical geography and symbolic landscapes of everything that comes into focus: the myth of the mountain, the stones, the articrafts preserved to our days through ancient rituals.

Photography opens our eyes, without seductions or aggression, to the image of an identity, our own identity, as travelers and strangers searching for the boundaries of our land, a metaphor of an inner drive to suppress the distances physical places to catch their deepest meaning.

"Imparare a ripartire e ricominciare".

Un'esortazione a guadagnare attraverso "il viaggio" quella consapevolezza nel "saper guardare" le cose, gli uomini in una concezione diversa rispetto ai luoghi comuni del nostro tempo. "Il Viaggio" dunque, anche della fotografia, o meglio di un modello del saper guardare nella "geografia privata" di un gruppo sociale, solidamente strutturato nei processi sociali, nelle azioni, nel lavoro, ultima permanenza di un mondo pressochè scomparso.

La fotografia allora prova a leggere la geografia storica e il paesaggio simbolico di tutto ciò che attraversa: dal mito della montagna alle pietre, ai manufatti trasportati nel tempo da antichi rituali.

Si apre così lo sguardo di un immagine che non cerca seduzioni o stupori ma forse la certezza di una identità, la nostra, viaggiatori e forestieri alla ricerca del confine di una terra, metafora di una tensione interiore volta a ridurre le distanze tra i luoghi fisici e il loro profondo significato.
