Ariadne continues John William Waterhouse’s devotion to the female form, with this outdoor scene being completed in 1898. Many of Waterhouse’s outdoor scenes feature classical architecture in a similar way to the work of Lawrence Alma Tadema and his models would all follow the same pattern of being tall, slim and elegantly dressed. In fact the red dress worn here maybe the same one featured in other paintings at around this time. Whatever the setting, Waterhouse would adorn his scenes with many additional items, which in this case are a couple of exotic animals who sleep aside Ariadne. There is also the expected flurry of flowers that can be found in many of his paintings and the overall atmosphere is one of relaxation and comfort.Waterhouse was an intriguing artist who arrived at around the end of the Pre-Raphaelite movement but implemented many of their ideas into his own work, along with inspiration from other sources such as Victorian literature as well as older mythology. His style was to depict feminine portraits in a calming atmosphere and was particularly popular during his own lifetime. He regularly exhibited new work at the Royal Academy and would later become an associate there.The model found in this painting would have been identified by notes left by the artist whenever he made use of a new subject. If this was her first time posing for Waterhouse, then the notes would have been included on the back of this painting – otherwise art historians would need to backtrack through his career in order to find the point at which she first appeared. She may also have appeared in some of his many study drawings.

Ariadne continua la devozione di John William Waterhouse alla forma femminile, con questa scena all’aperto completata nel 1898. Molte scene all’aperto di Waterhouse presentano un’architettura classica in modo simile al lavoro di Lawrence Alma Tadema e le sue modelle avrebbero tutte seguito lo stesso schema di essere alte, snelle ed elegantemente vestite. In effetti l’abito rosso indossato qui forse è lo stesso presente in altri dipinti in questo periodo. Qualunque sia l’ambientazione, Waterhouse adorna le sue scene con molti altri oggetti, che in questo caso sono un paio di animali esotici che dormono a parte Ariadne. C’è anche la raffica attesa di fiori che può essere trovata in molti dei suoi dipinti e l’atmosfera generale è quella di relax e comfort. Waterhouse era un artista intrigante che arrivò alla fine del movimento preraffaellita, ma implementò molte delle loro idee nel suo lavoro, insieme all’ispirazione da altre fonti come la letteratura vittoriana e la mitologia più antica. Il suo stile era quello di rappresentare ritratti femminili in un’atmosfera rilassante ed era particolarmente popolare durante la sua vita. Espone regolarmente nuovi lavori presso la Royal Academy e in seguito diventerà associato lì. Il modello trovato in questo dipinto sarebbe stato identificato da note lasciate dall’artista ogni volta che faceva uso di un nuovo soggetto. Se fosse stata la sua prima volta in posa per Waterhouse, le note sarebbero state incluse sul retro di questo dipinto, altrimenti gli storici dell’arte avrebbero bisogno di tornare indietro nella sua carriera per trovare il punto in cui è apparsa per la prima volta. Potrebbe anche essere apparsa in alcuni dei suoi numerosi disegni di studio .
